The Netherlands is not as well known for its cuisine as Italy or France but that doesn’t mean it is boring or the same as that of its neighbours. Dutch food is actually just as interesting as that of any country as it is certainly different to many of its neighbours. In addition, due to its colonial history, Dutch cuisine includes a number of dishes from Indonesia and Suriname in particular.
Dutch meals tend to be a little bit more unusual than in other countries, for example at breakfast times cereal is not eaten as much as in other countries instead open sandwiches with a wide variety of toppings are eaten. However in general lunch and dinner are very similar to other countries in their contents.
Dutch snacks are where Dutch cuisine gets much more interesting as there are a wide variety hot and cold snacks served at specialised snack bars and most fast food restaurants. From a dozen varieties of chips to raw fish, Dutch fast food is considerably different to that of its neighbours.
